Healing Doesn't Always Look Productive

Healing isn't always green juice and journaling. Sometimes it's crying, napping, and taking your dog to the park twice. And that still counts.

Lately, healing has not looked inspiring.

It hasn't looked like waking up at 5am, journaling in the sunlight, drinking green juice, or finally becoming the "best version" of myself.

Sometimes healing has looked like crying in the middle of the day because I'm overwhelmed about finances. Sometimes it's looked like staring at my computer feeling frozen because my nervous system is exhausted. Sometimes it's looked like feeling guilty for needing rest.

And honestly? Sometimes it's looked like taking my dog Bailey to the dog park twice in one day because I couldn't emotionally handle anything else.

This week has been heavy.

I've been stressed about money, work, uncertainty, and my health. My narcolepsy has been flaring badly, and the exhaustion has felt all-consuming. I kept telling myself I needed to push through it. My body clearly had other plans.

For a while, I felt disappointed in myself for not being more productive. I kept thinking: You should be working harder. You should be handling this better. You should be stronger than this.

But while I was sitting there criticizing myself, Bailey was laying in the grass completely unbothered by the fact that I hadn't checked enough things off a to-do list.

He just wanted to be near me.

He wanted sunshine. Fresh air. Interesting smells. A little joy. A little love.

And maybe healing is sometimes just that.

Maybe healing is not always dramatic transformation. Maybe it's not becoming a brand new person overnight. Maybe it's simply choosing softness instead of cruelty toward yourself.

Maybe healing is letting yourself rest without turning it into a moral failure.

Maybe healing is surviving emotionally heavy days without becoming cold.

Maybe healing is still showing love to people even when your own heart feels tired.

I think a lot of us secretly believe we have to earn rest by suffering enough first. That if we slow down, we're lazy. If we struggle, we're failing. If we're overwhelmed, we're weak.

But being human is exhausting sometimes.

Especially when you care deeply. Especially when you're trying to heal old wounds while also surviving everyday life. Especially when you're carrying responsibilities nobody else can fully see.

This week reminded me that healing doesn't always look productive.

Sometimes it looks like crying. Sometimes it looks like naps. Sometimes it looks like surviving. Sometimes it looks like laying in the grass next to your dog while your nervous system tries to remember what safety feels like again.

And honestly?

I think that still counts. 🤍
