The Best Gifts for Therapists Who Deserve to Be Appreciated

I have never actually given my therapist a gift.

Partly because I never know if that's appropriate. Partly because I wouldn't know where to start. But I've been sitting across from one for most of my adult life — and I know what these people do. I know what they hold. I know that they spend their days absorbing other people's hardest moments and somehow show up again the next week, steady and present and genuinely glad you're there.

They deserve a lot more appreciation than they get.

So if you're looking for therapist gifts — for your own therapist, a friend who's a therapist, or a family member in the mental health field — here's what I'd actually get them. As someone who's been on the receiving end of this work for years, I have opinions.

If you're looking for a starting point, our Gifts for Therapists collection has everything — shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, stickers, journals, mugs, and more. The Make Your Therapist Proud Shirt is our bestseller for a reason — it says everything.

The Ones That Get the Joke

The best thing you can give a therapist is proof that you actually understand what they do. These gifts do exactly that — they're funny because they're true, and any therapist worth their co-pay will immediately get it.

My Therapist Knows All Your Names | Mental Health Shirt - Self - Care Shirts

My Therapist Knows All Your Names T-Shirt

This one is essentially a warning label for everyone in your therapist's life. If you've ever vented about a coworker, a parent, an ex, or that one friend who never texts back — your therapist knows. All of them. By name. Possibly by nickname. This shirt is the funniest way to acknowledge that, and any therapist who has a sense of humor (which, in my experience, is most of them) is going to love it.

Make Your Therapist Proud T-Shirt

This was actually the very first design I ever drew — years before Self-Care Shirts existed. I made it for myself, wore it to my own therapy sessions, and eventually realized other people needed it too. For a therapist, receiving this as a gift is a full-circle moment. It's a reminder that the work they do actually lands. That people leave their offices trying to make them proud — which means they're doing something right.

Therapy Humor | Mental Health Shirt - Self - Care Shirts

I Go to Therapy to Deal With the People in My Life Who Don't Go to Therapy T-Shirt

Darkly relatable, Mean Girls energy, 100% true. Any therapist who has sat across from someone describing a family member or partner who "doesn't believe in therapy" will appreciate this one deeply. It's funny because it happens every single week.

The Ones That Say "I See You"

Therapists spend a lot of time making other people feel seen. These gifts flip that around. They're for the therapist who wears their profession as a calling — not just a job — and who might not always feel appreciated for how much they give.

The Life of a Therapist Sweatshirt - Self - Care Shirts

The Life of a Therapist Sweatshirt

This one has been our top-selling design lately, and for good reason. It captures something real about what it actually means to be a therapist — the emotional labor, the genuine care, the way they hold space for people even on the hard days. It's the kind of gift that makes a therapist feel understood, not just thanked. If you're only getting one thing, this is the one.

Therapy Girly Barbie Pink | Mental Health Shirt - Self - Care Shirts

Therapy Girly T-Shirt

For the therapist who has fully made therapy their whole personality — which, again, is most of them. This one is identity-driven and a little playful, perfect for the therapist who proudly tells everyone they know to go to therapy and means it every single time.

Smaller Gifts That Still Mean Something

Not every gift needs to be a statement piece. Sometimes you want to give something meaningful without a big spend — especially if you're a student, an intern, or someone who just wants to acknowledge their therapist without making it a whole thing. These options are lower price point but no less thoughtful.

Stickers

Our removable mental health stickers are a genuinely great small gift. They're hand-drawn, mission-driven, and the kind of thing a therapist can stick on their water bottle, their laptop, or their office wall. A few favorites for therapists specifically: "Be Kind to Your Mind," "You Are Enough," and "Choose Compassion (Especially for You)." Starting at $4.99.

Gifts Collection — mugs, journals, candles, totes, and blankets — all with the same mental health-forward design energy as the shirts. If your therapist has a cozy office (and most of them do), a candle or a mug is a simple, thoughtful way to add something warm to a space that holds a lot of hard conversations.

A Note on Whether It's "Appropriate" to Give Your Therapist a Gift

I asked myself this for years. The answer, at least from everything I've read and experienced: a small, thoughtful gift is almost always fine. It's a gesture of appreciation, not a transaction. If it feels weird to hand something directly to your therapist, you can always leave it at the front desk, or simply tell them you appreciated working with them.

The truth is, therapists don't do this work for the gifts. But that doesn't mean they don't deserve to feel appreciated. It just means the gesture matters more than the price tag.

All this to say — the best therapist gift is one that shows you actually paid attention. To what they do, to who they are, and to how much it costs them to show up for you week after week.

These do that.
