Why I Started Designing Mental Health Shirts (and How It Changed Me)
It started with a sketch — a phrase I needed to hear on a day I was struggling to believe in myself. I never set out to start a brand. I just needed a reminder that I was still healing, still trying, and still worthy of care.
That single sketch turned into a design, and that design turned into Self-Care Shirts — a place where I could turn my therapy notes, affirmations, and late-night journal entries into something wearable. Something that says: you’re not alone.
From Coping to Creating
For years, I’ve been on my own healing journey — through therapy, self-discovery, and the long process of unlearning survival mode. Art became one of my safest outlets. When words felt too heavy to say out loud, I drew them instead.
Over time, those drawings became messages — small mantras that helped me feel grounded again: Take a deep breath. Give yourself time to grow. You’re doing better than you think.
Designing mental health shirts became a way to channel that energy into something positive — something that could make others feel seen, too.
The Power of Humor and Heart
A lot of my designs blend humor with honesty because sometimes laughter is the only thing that helps us through the hard parts. Healing isn’t always soft and serious; sometimes, it’s messy, sarcastic, and perfectly imperfect.
Every shirt I make is meant to spark connection — to say, “Hey, me too.” Because the truth is, so many of us are just trying to find gentler ways to exist in a world that can be overwhelming.
What I Hope Each Design Says
I never want to make trauma trendy or minimize what people go through. The goal has always been to normalize mental health — to help it feel like part of everyday conversation.
Each shirt is designed with intention, whether it’s playful, comforting, or empowering. My hope is that when someone wears one, they feel a little lighter. That it gives them permission to rest, to laugh, or to simply be.
Healing Through Creation
Creating mental health shirts has changed the way I view both design and healing. It’s taught me that art doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful — it just has to be real.
If my work reminds even one person to show themselves a little more compassion, then it’s done its job.
